Sun Microsystems today announced the launch of several server products based on AMD's quad-core Opteron CPUs, the product of what Sun is calling today an extensive collaboration between the two manufacturers.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - May 13, 2008 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced the availability of its first Sun Fire and Sun Blade systems powered by Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, bringing new capabilities, increased performance and expanded scalability to customers that purchase or upgrade to these quad-core systems.

AMD launches their new innovation, the first energy-efficient x86 server processors with a four processing cores and an integrated memory controller all in a 55-watt ACP thermal envelope. The new AMD Quad-Core Opteron HE processors were designed to help datacenter manager who see power consumption and virtualization as the keys in solving their overall performance.

Advanced Micro Devices has announced the availability of low-power quad-core Opteron processors for server systems. These are B3 versions of its low-power Quad-Core Opteron processors which AMD first showed in September 2007.
