Retail

Selling goods or merchandise from a fixed location or site for direct consumption is known as retail. Generally a retail shop buys merchandise in large lots from a wholesale distributor to stock the storefront and generate individual sales. Within the last 5 years a large number of traditionally 'brick and mortar' locations have moved their businesses onto the Internet. Because of reduced operating costs, a potpourri of online stores (often referred to as 'etailing') in genres such as wedding favors, outdoor gear, health and insurance sales and many more topics have arrived.

Retail comes from the French for “cutting off, clip and divide” and was used to refer to tailoring. In pricing retail stores, generally there is a general markup considered appropriate for the goods and merchandise. Goods may also be priced by a suggested manufacturer’s retail price, which is the price the developer of the goods has set.

Retail blogs often include information for workers in the merchandising and retail display industries including store openings and examples of stand out displays and retail operators. The Retail Design Diva hosts one such blog site.
