SATIRE

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines satire as a trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly. From the Latin term satura lanx which means "medley, dish of colorful fruits," Roman rhetorician Quintilian believed satire to be a "wholly Roman phenomenon," though many ancient greek works are considered to be part of the satirical tradition.

Though often strictly defined as a literary form, it in practice is also found in the graphic and performing arts. Contemporary satire predominantly centers around political satire, though the term is often used imprecisely in reference to any use of parody or caricature in modern comedy. Stephen Colbert's The Colbert Report is an excellent example of modern American political satire, where the words and beliefs of American politicians are proven hypocritical as they are taken to their fullest logical conclusion.
