San Francisco

Tag details

San Francisco is the fourth-largest city in California. Despite the fact that it is not the largest city in the state, it is truly a major center of politics and culture. Its outspoken style and politically liberal climate have made San Francisco synonymous with the GLBT and green movements. Its tolerant outlook makes it a home to countless artists, musicians, and social experiments. Its bevy of colleges and universities and proximity to Silicon Valley make it a major home of technology; and it's just down the road from wine country, resulting in its status as an epicurean epicenter.

Although it is occasionally hamstrung by its own sense of irony, San Francisco (along with the greater Bay Area) consistently produces vast amounts of geek cool, sophisticated culture, and intellectual experimentation. Such Internet pillars as Wired and Yelp have their roots in San Francisco, as do revered blogs Laughing Squid and BoingBoing. Burning Man calls this city home, too.
