Site Search

Site search is search functionality that is specific to a particular web site. For instance, the site search function at Amazon.com only allows you to search for information on the Amazon site (although some sites will let you extend searches beyond their own content).

Fast site search that returns relevant results for keyword terms is an essential tool for e-commerce or informational web sites. Web visitors who are looking for products or information usually expect to find what they’re looking for on the first page of search results, or they’ll abandon the site.

In fact, smart online companies are ensuring that visitors never see a “no results” page, which can discourage visitors from remaining on the site. The “autocomplete” feature that is popular on Google and other search engines is starting to become standard on site search (for example, the storefront for clothing retailer Hot Topic).

Site search is part of most blogging software, allowing your visitors to research all of your previous blog posts. Online retailers are encouraged to blog to improve visibility for their business. Retailers’ site search should index all content, including blogs – not just products.
