Skype

Tag details

Skype software allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet, either to other Skype customers or, for a cost, to cell phones or landlines. It also incorporates features such as instant messaging, file transfers, and video conferencing. There are versions available for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.

Now owned by eBay and headed by President Josh Silverman, Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, previously the co-founders of peer-to-peer file sharing application Kazaa and, later, Joost. Skype uses a proprietary Internet telephony (VoIP) network based on the peer-to-peer model instead of the more common client-server model.

The Skype service is available in 28 languages and boasts over 300 million user accounts.
