Soil
There is great concern about the current condition of the world's soils, on which the human race depends for most of its food, to filter its water, and to support its very foundations.
Soil is often thought of as an inert collection of degraded rock, which does indeed form its framework, but organisms within the soil are vital to its health as they decompose organic matter, cycle nutrients, and enhance structure.
Many bloggers writing about soil are likely to be gardeners, often writing about soil types, about the use of compost to improve soils, or dealing with soil problems.
There's also been a lot of excitement about exploration of the soil on Mars.
