Moving through the water or swimming is a popular source of recreation, exercise and in some cases is a competitive sport. One of the most popular of Olympic events, swimming has received world wide recognition as a competitive sport. Since swimming is a low impact sport, it can offer lifelong benefits for health and fitness. People who swim may find an increase in endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness. A very popular way to do this cost effectively is to purchase a lap pool.

Swimming also has benefits for weight loss, at a rate of 3 calories per mile per pound. A person weighing 150 pounds who swims the mile in 30 minutes would burn 900 calories in an hour.
