The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight is broadly considered to be one of the best comic book movies ever made. Released in July of 2008, the film quickly picked up superior reviews for its themes, layering, and compelling storylines.
Perhaps the film's greatest selling feature came out of tragedy, as star Heath Ledger, who played the villainous Joker, passed away after shooting of the film concluded. Ledger died in January of 2008. His performance in The Dark Knight is considered by many to be iconic, with some critics leading a campaign to have Ledger nominated for an Oscar.
Along with Ledger, the movie stars Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-face, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as James Gordon, and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes.
The film gathered immense critical acclaim, but the praise was not unanimous. The overwhelming box office success of The Dark Knight made it just the second movie ever to earn more than $500 million at the North American box office.
