Type 1 Diabetes
In type 1 diabetes, the body attacks its own pancreas and destroys the insulin producing cells. Insulin is the key that opens up your cells so that glucose can enter and provide fuel. Without insulin, the cells remain locked and glucose builds up in the blood causing hyperglycemia or high blood sugar. Someone with diabetes must regularly take insulin or perish. Before the discover of insulin the 1920s, the average time of death after diagnosis was a mere six weeks.
Diabetes affects all aspects of one's life. People with diabetes must carefully count their carbohydrate intake, take finely tuned and ever-changing dosages of insulin, and carefully work to keep the blood sugars in equilibrium. As a result, a vibrant community of type 1 diabetes bloggers have emerged across the web to share support and information about what is working for them.
