Universal Electronics (UEIC) is a small company that makes different types of pre-programmed remote controls primarily for home entertainment. At the company’s web site, I learned that UEIC makes more than 20 types of wireless remotes that are pre-programmed to work with over 2400 brands, and has a library of more than 300,000 device codes.

So here’s a slightly weird story. The bottom line is that Zilog (ZILG) has announced that one week ago it received an unsolicited $4.50-a-share takeover bid from Universal Electronics (UEIC), a company which makes TV remote controls. Universal made the bid via a letter from its CEO, Paul Arling, to Zilog Chairman Federico Faggin.

The Street’s recession preparations continue. This morning, RBC Capital’s Scot Ciccarelli chopped estimates for a host of retailing stocks, including the ones we care about here at Tech Trader Daily: Best Buy (BBY), Circuit City (CC) and Radio Shack (RSH).
