The Allman Brothers Band are suing a record company and demanding a bigger cut of their recordings sold through third parties such as Apple’s iTunes music service. The Southern rock band filed its lawsuit against UMG Recordings Inc.

The piracy trial is getting interesting. Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group won a $222,000.00 verdict against defendant Jammie Thomas for making songs available via Kazaa. The problem is that no one downloaded the songs; they were only discovered by MediaSentry.

UMG has launched a new digital music store called Lost Tunes in the UK, which focuses on rare and exclusive tracks. Digital firm 7digital is running the store for UMG, and it currently offers a choice of 134 albums from artists like the Walker Brothers, Comsat Angels and Nine Below Zero.

In an unusual copyright infringement case, a defendant (Denise Barker) admits that she engaged in downloading copyrighted materials using Kazaa’s peer-to-peer (P2P) network. What makes this case unique is that the defendant is challenging the constitutionality of the damages music companies are trying to extract from her in the lawsuit.

As part of Vivendi’s second-quarter financial results announcement, the company has revealed Universal Music Group’s performance. UMG generated revenues of just over 1 billion for the quarter, which is either a 5.3% decline (in real terms) or a 3% rise (if you take currency fluctuations into account).
