United Nations
The United Nations, or UN, includes most or all of the world's countries as member states, and has several purposes. Among them is accomplishing the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and fostering discussions between nations to bring about world peace. It was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II.
Some critics argue that the United Nations compromises the sovereignty of independent nations by its direct role in influencing international peacekeeping efforts, which is largely the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council.
Others argue that before the invasion of Iraq, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell presented a false arguments to the United Nations Security Council, based on the claim that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction, a claim that would later be discredited.
Whether the United Nations is too quick to act, or too slow to act, it is a large force for change around the world, and will continue to attract controversy while it works toward accomplishing its goals.
