United Airlines
United Airlines has been around in one form or another since 1910, however it has only been known by its current name since 1934 when it was born out of a split of Boeing, a move necessitated by new laws preventing manufacturers and airlines from working under the same ownership.
The history of United Airlines has been mostly positive, although there have been a few bumps along the way. In 1985, there was a strike by United's pilots lasting nearly a month and ultimately costing the airline nearly $1 billion. In 2001, the effects of 9/11 were almost immediate for United, causing millions of dollars in losses, leading the airline to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a subsequent reorganization that lasted over two years.
United Airlines, which operates as a subsidiary of the UAL Corportation, is currently based out of Chicago, Illinois. United Airlines currently has hubs in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington. According to United's site, the airline flies to over 200 US and international destinations with 3,200 flights per day.
