Wallpaper in terms of computers typically refers to the background image on the main system screen when no other windows are open.  It can be set and changed through the display properties in Windows, and other individual programs sometimes have the ability to set an image as the wallpaper background, including MS Paint, and right-click context menus in Web browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Wallpaper selection is one of many ways users can personalize their workspace, using virtually any image, provided it is in JPG or BMP format.  Using wallpaper management programs opens up the variety of file types one can use, as well as which images are considered and in what order and with what frequency the image changes.  Programs like Flash Wallpaper can even make a video file into a usable background.

It's common to see sites on the Internet devoted solely to the creation and offering of wallpaper background images consisting of a vast range of themes, from relaxing to humorous to exciting to sexy.  Similar images will often be formatted to suit different screen resolutions (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc.) and ratios (4:3, 16:9, 16:10, etc.)

Wallpaper use has expanded to devices besides computers as well, including cell phones and other mobile devices, as well as gaming consoles.

Of course, there's also the wallpaper that goes on the walls of your dwelling, which is how computer wallpaper got its name.  If you have to stare at something all the time, it might as well look nice, the way you want it to.
