War on terror

Tag details

The War On Terror(ism) is a term used most frequently during the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush, referring to political, military, and legal conflict against terrorist organizations in the wake of 9/11.

The resulting ideology is commonly held to have been a major contributor to such actions as the Iraq War and the internment of political prisoners in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, as well as the creation of the Patriot Act and other controversial legal and political movements.

A hotly debated topic in the blogosphere, the War On Terror continued to be a common phrase even after its official discontinuation by the Obama administration (in favor of the slightly-more-doublespeak "Overseas Contingency Operation"). Bloggers disagree greatly on definitions of terrorism and what actions should be taken against terrorists and terror organizations, and in the pundit-heavy blogosphere, little middle ground can be reached. The War On Terror may officially be over, but there can be no doubt that the ideas it signifies still occupy the minds of many, and that this issue has yet to be resolved in the public consciousness.
