    Wibree vs. Bluetooth During October 2006, several tech companies, mainly Nokia, have announced that they will be launching new wireless networking technology called Wibree. However, Wibree will not be related to current Wi-Fi technologies, due to the fact that it will not have the range and bandwidth that Wi-Fi has.

    Nokia developed and licensed a technology called a few years ago, and intended it to be an alternative for the current generation of Bluetooth technology. Wibree requires only a tenth of the energy consumed by its counterparts, and was developed for short distance communication between two devices, like say a Bluetooth headset and a mobile phone.

    Wireless connectivity is the name of the game in the mobile industry, and Wibree, the next-generation Bluetooth standard, is making a splash with its new name. Wibree will now be known as ULP (Ultra Low Power) Bluetooth. ULP allows for 10 times lower power consumption during regular Bluetooth connection and a 50-fold decrease in power-draw during Bluetooth data transfers.

    Wibree, now known as Ultra Low Power Bluetooth saw its first working demo today. CSR, the chip manufacturer successfully demonstrated data transfer between 2 dual mode bluetooth chips. The venue was a medical conference in Luxembourg. The chips will be commercially available from this year itself.
