Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an online multilingual encyclopedia project launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger and operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.

It has over 10 million articles, about a quarter of which are in English and all of which have been written collaboratively by volunteers from all over the Internet. Almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone, and users collectively police the quality of the content based on a set of consensual rules. The process of editing by consensus can sometimes lead to bias, inconsistency or homogenization of content.

It is currently the largest and most popular general reference resource on the Internet.
