Windows Mobile

Tag details

Windows Mobile is a pared down version of Microsoft's popular Windows operating system on the PC.  It's designed to bring common features over from PCs to mobile phones to make the transition easier for those already familiar with basic Windows functions and navigation.

Things like the taskbar, Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player make the jump to Windows Mobile, though in accordingly simplified fashion (i.e., designed to fit a smaller screen and touchscreen interface).  There's a Media Center edition of it, and special functions for use in automobiles are also available, depending on your hardware.

The OS originally debuted in 2000 as Pocket PC, and then after a few upgrades became known as Windows Mobile in 2003.  It continues to see support and improvements concurrent with advances in mobile technology, including features like Internet Connection Sharing.  This allows you to connect the Windows Mobile device to a standard computer via Bluetooth or a USB port, and then that computer can use the phone to attain Internet access.
