Tic Tac Toe over Jabber

One of the missing features in jabber most commercial instant messaging systems have are small games one can easily play over them. Till now, because just yesterday, gajim got support for Tic Tac Toe over jabber. Which reminds me tic tac toe was one of the first »programming projects« I did in the past, some day I'll have to dig out the sources and publish them.

Sander recently wrote about Facebook’s announcement that they would be exposing their new chat features via XMPP over at the Cocinella blog. I’m very happy to hear that another large company is planning to support open standards, and I completely agree with Sander that we should avoid walled gardens.

The biggest story to hit the telecom world in a while, in my opinion, is Facebook’s decision to go XMPP with their chat client. I think it means a ton for SIP/Simple, for developers and the IM Gulag perpetuated by Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL. So we talked about it on the SquawkBox. Some conclusions:

Great news! The Facebook team is building a Jabber/XMPP interface for Facebook Chat. That means we can use whichever client we want to instant message our online friends on Facebook, update our status, and more. Digsby managed to hack together a good integration just two weeks ago, but the well anticipated Jabber/XMPP interface will greatly improve adoption.

With Facebook's announcement that they are moving forward to enable cross-platform chat using XMPP/Jabber the chat wars are effectively over. With Facebook and Google on the XMPP. bandwagon it's just a matter of time until the proprietary services either switch or become totally irrelevant.

WeeWar broke in a wave across the office this afternoon. (thankfully late afternoon, or I might have gotten nothing done today). Its a Web-based turn based strategy game, thats very well done. Sort of a “Flickr for Risk”, with a nice value add pro account ($24.95/year), and APIs, social networking features, and a chatty tone.

Those cagey guys at Facebook are about to do something which nobody else in the last five years has been able to do. They’re about to crown Jabber/XMPP the king of IM protocols, and in the process they may finally crack the hegemony that AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo have enjoyed in the IM market for the last decade.

Came across this just now: Using Facebook Chat via Jabber Thats a lot of new victim^H^H^H^H^H^Husers to the XMPP network. This, and the fact that my Google Alerts on XMPP is now showing about 10 hits per day (from less than 10 per week just 18 months ago), and I would say that XMPP is turning out to be one hot technology at the moment.
