The Rabbi's Cow is Always Kosher (II)

    http://eaazi.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 09/ rabbis-cow-is-always-kosher-ii.html

Self-Interest Modifies Decisions or Judgments   I used a translation of a cynical Yiddish proverb for the title of the blog entry on the Agriprocessors story.   In Jewish law there are many reasons why a Rabbi might declare meat from a slaughtered cow non-kosher, but in the case of his own cow and his own economic self-interest, he might judge the entrails differently.

My English translation of "Gimpl Tam" (Gimpel the Fool) by I. B. Singer, part one

    http://pratie.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 09/ my-english-translation-of-gimpl-tam.html

This is the beginning of the translation I've done over the last couple days. I get a chance every week or two to consult with my friend Musia Lakin about the hard parts...The first translation of "Gimpl Tam" (Gimpel the Fool) was done in 1953 by Saul Bellow, you can find it in A Treasury of Yiddish Stories.

Monday Yiddish - Short Week Edition

    http://www.someoneinatree.com/ 2008/ 09/ mon.html

Since today is technically Monday for all of us who had a three-day weekend (and I hope yours was totally ta'am gan eyden), it's time for our weekly installment of Yiddishkeit. This week's word is momzer, which means "bastard." Pronunciation is pretty straight-forward: [MUM-zer] although the "u" sound in the first syllable should lean a bit towards the "o" sound.
