ab

Ab is a shortened term that stands for abdominal muscle. In fact, the musculature of the abdomen comprises of several muscles that perform numerous important functions.

The transverse abdominal muscle is located on the anterior and lateral abdominal wall and it is believed to be a prime core stabilizer (meaning it is responsible for maintaining a healthy, upright posture and providing support for the back and spine).

The rectus abdominis is the largest and most visible of the abdominal muscles, colloquially called the "six-pack". As it is a superficial muscle, toning it will produce quickly noticeable results in individuals of healthy body weight. This is an important postural muscle, responsible for enabling us to crunch and flex the spine, while its contractions are also able to assist breathing when we are short of breath.

The external oblique is a large, flat and superficial muscle that enables trunk rotation and side bending, while also supporting and compressing the abdominal cavity. In women, this muscle is generally not visible due to subcutaneous fat deposits. The internal oblique lies just beneath the external oblique and performs two important roles: it has an opposite effect to the diaphragm, enabling exhalation by reducing the volume of the thoracic cavity. When the diaphragm relaxes, the internal obliques contract, pushing the content of the abdominal cavity upwards into the diaphragm and compressing the lungs, which expel the air. In addition, they work with the external obliques to achieve trunk rotation and side bending.

The pyramidalis muscles are tiny, triangular muscles located in the lower area of the abdomen, and present a great degree of variation, being completely absent in about 20% of the human population. They are responsible for tensing the vertical, fibrous midline of the abdominal muscles.

Core muscle workout is considered an essential part of any fitness regime since good core strength improves overall physical performance, eliminates back pain and corrects postural imbalances. Moreover, fitness model and Ab Circle Pro spokeswoman Jennifer Nicole Lee stresses on the importance of core training to achieve a model-slim waistline and good back support, especially for women who have been through pregnancy.
