abortion

Tag details

An abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before full term brought about either by artificial means or through natural occurrence (in which case it is more commonly termed a miscarriage or "spontaneous abortion"). Two main methods of abortion are used in modern medicine, surgical and medical (using hormone tablets). Historically many other highly dangerous methods have been used.

There is considerable variation in abortion law around the world, ranging from the Netherlands which has abortion on request up to 22 weeks' gestation (and one of the world's lowest abortion rates), to Britain where it is legal up to 24 weeks (although a woman must get two doctors' signatures to approve the procedure), to Nicaragua, where there is a total ban on the procedure (which has been described as a denial of women's basic rights).

Bloggers using the tag are likely to be debating the legal and moral aspects of abortion. This is particularly a highly emotional issue within American politics.
