academy awards
The Academy Awards is the annual ceremony where the American motion picture industry honors the top achievements in film for the year. Awards are handed out in numerous categories — including the top prizes for best motion picture, best director, best actor and actress, and best supporting actor and actress — by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences.
The awards, called Oscars for short, are the highest honor that a film can receive. The history of the Oscars reads like a veritable history of Hollywood royalty.
Each year, the nationally televised Oscars show is seen by millions of viewers, and draws some of the years biggest television ratings. Many tune in hoping just as much to see the outrageous antics of Hollywood celebrities on the red carpet — and who is wearing or saying what — as they do to cheer on their favorite movies and actors. For Hollywood itself, its biggest night is marked as much by glitzy parties as it is by the awards themselves.
In the blogosphere, Oscar is also a very big deal. Some bloggers will log their awards predictions, while others follow the action at the parties.
