Acne (acne vulgaris) is a cosmetic skin condition caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland). Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in noninflammatory forms. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, blemishes, or zits. 

Acne is known to cause extreme psychological distress among some patients. 85% of teens and large numbers of adults are affected by acne.

Acne treatments include drugs, laser treatments, and chemically activated photodynamic  treatments (PDT).

Dermatologists are the medical specialty that treats severe acne. IPL and laser medical treatments for acne are offered at most med spas and skin clincs and often have blog posts offering information around acne and medical treatments that address it.

Due to the fact that acne induces psychological distress and most often affects web savvy teens, the blogosphere is filled with blogs discussing acne as an ailment and offering acne solutions. Splogs (spam blogs) around acne and acne treatments are common and dilute the dissemination of relevant information.
