ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a type of DSL line that provides fast data and communications over existing copper telephone lines. Although it may seem a little archaic, this transmission is much quicker than transmissions across conventional voice band modems and is also much cleaner.

In the past, an ADSL installation required a professional to come out to the actual home or company to install the micro filters and splitters needed for it to work. However, lately, ADSL companies can send out a kit and the home or business owner can install the ADSL themselves. This saves both time and money and has been widely embraced as the new way of doing business.

As with most types of transmissions, there are some drawbacks to ADSL. Mainly distance. Transmissions can usually only be transmitted over a short length (somewhere between two and five miles). Even utilizing fiber optic cable instead of copper telephone lines, the transmissions can usually only be transmitted about 30 miles from point-to-point.
