africa
Africa is the second largest of the earth's seven continents, covering about 30,330,000 sq km. It comprises about 22 percent of the world's total land area. It consists of 54 countries, including its adjacent islands, 53 if you consider Western Sahara part of Morocco. The continent, as of 2009, has a population around 1 billion, with almost 800 languages spoken. Most archaeologists and anthropologists currently agree that human beings originated in Africa and then spread out across the world.
The continent is host to diverse cultures, to the worlds longest river, the Nile, and is rich in natural resources. The history of the continent is comprehensive, with large parts of Africa colonized by Europeans early on. Africa was the origin of the slave trade to colonial America. Books on the history of the continent and specific countries can be found via booksellers and internet search engines, or by scrolling through university archives and curriculum book assignments.
Tourism is a booming industry in parts of Africa, and you can find numerous blogs about it. National Geographic Africa carries some of the best information, but there are many travel agents dealing specifically with African vacations. They are found easily online. It is suggested when traveling to Africa from the United States that you check the State Department's current travel warnings.
