The already dramatic sell-off in the fertilizer sector during the past two months got much worse on Thursday as Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT), Agrium Inc. (AGU) and The Mosaic Co. (MOS) saw huge declines. Downgrades from “buy” to “underperform” at Merrill Lynch (MER) were partly to blame as the firm cited doubts about the near-term demand for fertilizer.

Agrium Inc.’s (Agrium) NYSE common stock declined significantly since our news alert dated 29 September 2008 due to a decline in fertilizer prices coupled with a decline in the US stock market. Given the decline in urea prices, we are likely to lower our revenue and profitability estimates in our next update report.

On 26 September 2008, Agrium’s NYSE common stock declined 14.5% in a single day’s trading to close at US$64.00, over concerns of a decline in urea prices further compounded by a reduction in target prices and rating cuts by leading analysts.

On the surface, Agrium's 2Q 08 results look impressive, as EPS increased 245% y-o-y to US$4.00. However, adjusted for the acquisition of UAP and non-recurring income, EPS stands at just US$2.90, and y-o-y comes in at a slightly less eye-catching 170%.
