AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, the software or hardware imitation of intellect and consciousness. The term also describes a branch of science that explores the connection between cybernetics, neurology, psychology and information theory, in order to replicate the process of thought. The purpose of Artificial Intelligence research is to imbue robots or software programs with human-like thinking abilities, and to make them able to employ advance reasoning, analysis, deduction, improvisation, planning, and decision-making.

Currently, simple AI’s are used in many ways, including automated online assistants, intelligent search algorithms, medical diagnosis tools, autonomous weapon or rescue platforms, video games, toys, speech and writing recognition. Other examples of working AI include a chess-grandmaster Deep Blue computer, as well as quiz-winning IBM Watson.

Early works on artificial mind begun in 17th century, with scientists and philosophers like Leibniz, Hobbes, and Descartes, who believed that rational thought can be represented as a mathematical algorithm. The term itself was created in 1956 by John McCarthy, early Artificial Intelligence researcher and creator of LISP computer language, used to this day for programming AI’s.

The best known procedure for evaluating the Artificial Intelligence is called the Turing test. It involves a remote conversation between two participants – if humans are unable to differentiate the artificial partners from the real ones, the AI “passes”. So far, no AI is able to reliably pass the Turing test.
