alaska governor

Alaska became a State in 1959, existing before that as Alaska Territory, and before that as the District of Alaska. As a District, Territory, and now State, Alaska has had a Governor, though the Governors of the Territory and District were appointed, not elected. Before that, it was the Department of Alaska, and had a military Commander rather than a Governor.

In 2008, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was chosen to the Republican candidate for U.S. Vice President. The Blogosphere and major media sources debated whether Palin's experience as Governor was helpful preparation for the Vice President role, with some touting the Governor's role as head of the Alaska National Guard and the resultant security briefings, while others suggested her involvement in Alaska National Guard operations was minimal or inconsequential.

Sarah Palin was the ninth elected Governor of Alaska, and the first woman Governor of that state.
