american express
American Express began back in the early 1850s, and at the time it was the low man on the totem pole. But through smart business practices and a different type of business model than the other credit card companies, it quickly climbed to the very top of the food chain and now runs easily with other big dogs like Visa and MasterCard. American Express Cards account for about 25 percent of the total dollar volume of credit card transactions in the United States. More than any other card issuer.
American Express is based out of New York City. The company is said to be worth almost $15 billion dollars. It ranked the 22nd Most Valuable Brand in the World and was named one of the Top 30 Most Admired Companies in the World last year (2009).
American Express is most known for its money orders and traveler's checks, but it also deals in credit cards, checks, and the American Express Gold Card.
