College President Puts Failed Amethyst Initiative into Practice

    http://www.discoveringalcoholic.com/ blog/ the-discovering-alcoholic/ college-pr…

See the old guy with the deranged grin pouring beer down the hot college chick’s throat? He is Robert Paxton, the now-resigned president of Iowa Central Community College, putting the recently announced Amethyst Initiative into practice by preparing these “young adults to make responsible decisions about alcohol use.” Yes, I'm being facetious.

The Debate on Alcohol and 21 Year Olds

    http://psychcentral.com/ blog/ archives/ 2008/ 08/ 28/ the-debate-on-alcohol-and…

Suddenly it’s a new world once again, as states take their independence seriously and realize that they are not beholden to our federal government for laws they disagree with. The law in question is the forced adoption of the 21-year-old alcohol drinking age, basically federal law since 1984 (states

Amethyst Initiative: Lowering the Legal Drinking Age to 18

    http://cvillain.com/ 2008/ 08/ 27/ amethyst-initiative-lowering-the-legal-drinki…

The Amethyst Initiative is a movement backed by college chancellors and presidents to lower the drinking age to 18. While the University of Virginia President, John T. Casteen, doesn’t know “whether eventually [he] will sign this initiative or not,”  it is an interesting debate, nonetheless.

College Presidents Call For Lowering Of Drinking Age To 18

    http://www.saycampuslife.com/ 2008/ 08/ 27/ college-presidents-call-for-lowering…

Frat house binge drinkers have an unlikely ally when it comes to supporting their habit. A group of college presidents are calling for a national discussion on lowering the drinking age to 18. But, as some would see this news, the reasons for changing the drinking age from 21 to 18 has nothing to do with promoting alcoholism.

    Amethyst Initiative No Gem

Hat Tip and thanks to unofficial TDA researcher AnnaZ for the heads up on this one! A coalition of college presidents and chancellors launched the Amethyst Initiative in July of this year to support “informed and unimpeded debate” on the federal minimum drinking age.

The Ameythyst Initiative. Rethinking the Drinking Age.

The Ameythyst Initiative. Rethinking the Drinking Age. I was a little stunned to read about the Amethyst Initiative, a quest by university and college chancellors and presidents to legally reduce the drinking age from 21 to 18. They have signed their names to a public statement to this effect and are calling for elected leaders to back them up.

College presidents' project deserves failing grade

    http://www.tonycartledge.com/ 2008/ 08/ college-presidents-project-deserves.html

As of August 25, a group of more than 125 college presidents and chancellors have signed on to promote one of the dumbest ideas ever to emerge from an administrative office -- they want to combat binge drinking among college students by lowering the legal age for alcohol use from 21 to 18.
