An antioxidant is a nutrient that works inside of the body to prevent and repair cell damage. Antioxidants protect the body from the effects of free radicals and oxidation. An antioxidant acts as a Good Samaritan by donating an electron to neutralize free radicals.

A good visual demonstration of what happens inside the body as an antioxidant works its magic is seen when witnessing an apple's inner flesh stay white, instead of browning, when it is dipped into a liquid high in vitamin C (an antioxidant), like orange juice.

Some of the hotter health food supplements on the market today that have unusually high contents of antioxidants are resveratrol and acai berry. Some of the better-known antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E, and carotenoids and flavonoids.
