Rather than the hard-nosed, disciplinarian style of an incarcerator, antioxidants are more like rehabilitators. When the rogue free radical is gallivanting around, wreaking havoc by thieving an electron from a cell in your body, the antioxidant steps in and acts like Jean Valjean instead of Javier (both of Les Miserables fame) by making an electron gift, neutralizing any potential harm and preventing a dangerous chain reaction.

Antioxidants
are thought to be helpful in preventing debilitating and degenerative diseases such as cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, strokes, and a whole host of other diseases and conditions caused in part by oxidative stress and free radical damage.

The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) score of any given food is an indication of how high content a food has of antioxidants and how well it can protect cells from oxidative damage. Some foods high in antioxidants are resveratrol and the acai berry.
