The best way to describe the App Store is to look at just what it can provide visitors with. The App Store is an online marketplace that sell products specifically manufactured to be compatible with the IPhone, IPad, and IPod Touch. Most applications that can be purchased through the App Store are going to be free or have a minimal cost associated with them. After a purchase is made through the App Store, it can be directly downloaded to your device or onto your computer using the Apple ITunes service.

The App Store currently has approximately 160,000 individual applications that have garnered roughly 3.5 billion downloads since the store's opening in mid-July 2008. When the IPhone 3G was released, also in mid-July, it came preloaded with the capabilities of downloading content directly from the App Store. While the term "app store" is widely used in this industry, it is Apple that has the copyright on it.

An IPhone comes preloaded with different applications already loaded onto the device. The nice thing about purchasing apps from the App Store is that they can used and removed from the device at the consumer's discretion whereas the preloaded apps cannot be removed. Anyone can create an "app," but they are subject by approval from Apple, which has caused some controversy in terms of what is and is not acceptable.
