Applications are software tools or programs that run on an operating system to perform a specific set of functions and tasks for the end users. Applications can be anything from a simple desktop screensaver, a program overseeing financial trading to keep track of a forex book, or much more complex large scale infrastructure enterprise solutions like those used for running managed hosting solutions for a data center.

Business applications such as Microsoft Office include a complete suite of applications to accomplish word processing and data management with spreadsheets. Applications are continually being tweaked to run faster and more efficient within a smaller framework like on wireless phones turning them into small handheld computers.
