    Mardirosian Guilty

    http://illicit-cultural-property.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ mardirosian-guilty.html

Robert Mardirosian was found guilty by a jury yesterday in US District Court in Boston. From the Boston Globe: Mardirosian, 74, who faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison, sat impassively as each of the 12 jurors individually agreed with the verdict in response to a defense request to poll the jury.

    Federal Art Theft Prosecution

    http://illicit-cultural-property.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ prosecution-opens-in-fe…

The trial of Robert Mardirosian has begun. For much more on the initial arrest of the former attorney, see my earlier summary here, and more from Donn Zaretsky. Assistant US Attorney Jonathan Mitchell argued the defendant was "caught red-handed", while the defense attorney argued his client only wanted to collect a finder's fee for the works.

Tons of links this week! — So, the Olympic opening ceremony!  The very beautiful first half of the show featured ancient Chinese paper and printing technology, including a giant LED scroll, human calligraphy, a troop of dancers dressed as Confucian disciples carrying bamboo scrolls, and a truly amazing homage to movable type.

    Traveling Tech?

Recently an article from Scheiner on Security tweaked my interest, as it has many security professionals. I began to research the actual policy and am even more stunned than when I read scheiner’s initial article.

More on the Caravaggio Theft in Odessa

    http://illicit-cultural-property.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ more-on-caravaggio-thef…

There are more reports now on the theft of Taking of Christ or the Kiss of Judas attributed to Caravaggio. It was stolen from the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in Odessa, Ukraine. Reportedly, the stolen work looks very similar to this work, also called The Taking of Christ which is on display in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.

    Caravaggio Stolen in Odessa

    http://illicit-cultural-property.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ caravaggio-stolen-in-od…

There are a few wire reports indicating a work attributed to Caravaggio The Taking of Christ has been stolen from a museum in Odessa, Ukraine. It seems the thieves removed the windows, so as to evade the alarm system.Questions or Comments? Email me at derek.fincham@gmail.com
