Assets are a mysterious thing. Your 26-foot sailboat could certainly be listed as an asset in your portfolio. However, your vinyl version of "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus probably wouldn't be. Your gold bullion you keep in the wine cellar downstairs could certainly be listed as an asset. But, that unopened box of fish sticks in the freezer probably wouldn't.

What makes an asset valuable and what makes it worthless? That is a question for the ages. Although that Ken Griffey, Jr. Upper Deck Rookie Card in your baseball card collection may be priced at $250 in the pricing guide, it is only worth that if you can find someone who will pay you $250 for it. Otherwise, it is just another piece of cardboard in your collection of little pieces of cardboard.

However, if you can get a buyer for that original, vintage copy of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, you can dance around like an 1860's Gold Prospector because you, my friend, have an asset.

Simplistically stated, assets are things of value that can be readily converted into cash (although cash itself is also considered an asset).
