The Intel Atom processor is generally used in MIDs (or Mobile Internet Devices), desktops and netbooks as it has been optimized for mobile computing needs.

The microprocessor was previously referred to by the codename Silverthorne.

The availability of Atom processors was first introduced in 2008. However, system builders and even homeowners obtain this processor separately. Nevertheless, they can find it already pre-installed to some motherboards.

Intel Atom can perform at least 2 instructions for every cycle. It is similar to x86 microprocessors, as it can also interpret x86 instructions to a much easier internal processes before implementation.

The Atom processor is now being used in HP mini series, Dell Inspiron Mini Series, MSI Wind PC netbooks, ASUS Eee PCs, Lenovo IdeaPad S10 and even on several series of Aleutia desktops.
