The term Australian can either refer to a citizen of Australia, or to an object and being that originated in Australia. Since Australia is a multicultural country, the term Australian cannot be used as a racial identifier.

The population of Australia consists of Indigenous Australian people who have inhabited the Australian continent and its surrounding islands for the last 40,000 years and people of mainly European origin who have immigrated to Australia within the past 230 years. Consequently, Australian mainstream culture is a Western-type culture that emerged from the traditions of Western European immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland.


Australian Aboriginals are believed to have migrated primarily from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. In the late 18th century, much of Australia was claimed for Great Britain by captain James Cook. Although at the time of James Cook arrival, the Aboriginal population was estimated to be between 315,000 and 750,000 people, a 2006 survey showed that Australian Aboriginals represented 2.5% of the total population, or about 517,200 individuals.

Australia is a highly developed nation and the world's thirteenth largest economy, with the worlds fifth highest per capita income. Australian web hosting companies, for example, serve businesses in entire Asia Pacific region. The country is very advanced both technologically and scientifically, with 37 government-funded universities and multiple research centers. Politically, Australia has a liberal democratic tradition as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy, which comprises of six states and several additional territories.

Australia also scores high in international surveys that measure national performance, with very good results for quality of life, health, education, economic freedom, as well as the protection of civil liberties and political rights.

Because of its geographic isolation, the environment of Australia is diverse and unique. Over 80% of the animals and plants that dwell there can only be found on the Australian continent. Australia also presents the greatest number of reptiles of any country, with over 750 species living in the wild.

The country's national language in Australian English, which is spoken by the majority of Australians, although some of the Indigenous people speak other English dialects, such as Australian Aboriginal English and Torres Strait English. Due to the diverse backgrounds of Australians, a number of community languages are also spoken, including Italian, Greek, Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish and German.
