Auto warranties are a bizarre squirrel cage. When you are sold one, you are told it covers everything on your car from "bumper-to-bumper." However, when you actually go to make a claim on your warranty to the service department, you quickly find out that only certain parts of the area between the two bumpers are actually covered. As with most things in life, the devil is in the details. The poison is in the print. But, it is certainly much better to have coverage on some of the more expensive car parts than none at all.

Most car warranties are anywhere from the very bare minimum (one year), to the average (three years), to the extended length (five years). There are some companies that also offer customers an extended warranty or a used car warranty for cars that are up to 12 years old.

You can buy an auto warranty from an insurance company or insurance cover-holder. Non-manufacturer based warranties are technically called service contracts or motor vehicle service agreements. These should not be sold as warranties, but rather as service contracts or service agreements.
