baidu
Baidu is arguably the most popular site in all of China, offering its native and non-native users a search engine that finds relevant sites, audio, and images.
Baidu's name comes from a Song Dynasty poem written by Xin Qiji in the 12th century. On Baidu's site, they explain this by saying the following: "Many people have asked about the meaning of our name. 'Baidu' was inspired by a poem written more than 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The poem compared the search for a retreating beauty amid chaotic glamour with the search for one's dream while confronted by life's many obstacles. '...hundreds and thousands of times, for her I searched in chaos, suddenly, I turned by chance, to where the lights were waning, and there she stood.' Baidu, whose literal meaning is hundreds of times, represents persistent search for the ideal."
Baidu had its IPO in the United States on August 5, 2005, offering its stock at a price of $27. The stock did not disappoint, opening on the market at $66 and closing at $122.54, a gain of 354%.
