Last week’s Torah parsha was Pinchas. (Numbers 25:10-30:1) Continuing from last week’s parsha, Balak, Pinchas begins with the conclusion of the story of the plague of Baal-peor (Numbers 25). Balak ends with the men of Israel falling prey to their lustful appetites for non-Isralite women.

Numbers 23:10 Who counted the dust of Jacob or the number of a fourth of [or, of the seed of] Israel? May my soul die the death of the upright and let my end be like his. The seed, can be taken as a remez back to the Seed of the Woman, the Promised Seed.

Balak, Curses, Blessings, Jesse and You Jul 12th, 2008 by rabbijim Balak, King of Moav hires Balam to curse Israel, but all Balam can do is bless Balak’s nemesis. While this is the story in our Torah portion, I think we see the opposite today.

Once again it is Friday morning and it is time to write the Parsha discussion. This week is Parsha Balak which is in the Book of Numbers 22:2-25:9. The last two weeks we have witnessed a great drop in the Children of Israels trust in Hashem. Many of those who left Egypt had died in the desert from a number of decrees.

This week’s parsha is parshat “Balak.” The evil prophet1 Balaam is summoned by Balak to curse the Jews. Against Hashem’s desire, Balaam saddles his she-donkey and journeys to the land of Moav to curse the Jews. Hashem sends an angel to impede Balaam’s way.

"Mah Tovu Ohaleicha Ya'akov, Mishkenoteicha Yisrael". How good are your tents, Ya'akov; your dwellings, Yisrael! These words, some of the first we utter each morning as we enter the Beit Knesset for Shacharit, are the opening words of the third and climactic blessing that Bil'am utters in place of the curse he was summoned from afar to place upon Israel.
