The term bald is used to refer to a person who lacks some or all of the hair covering their head. Baldness can affect both males and females, and its most common cause is a condition called androgenic alopecia. This condition is also known as male pattern baldness and it does not occur in humans only. Other primates such as chimpanzees and orangutans are also known to be affected by it.

A regular hair loss treatment will help slow down baldness, or even stop it altogether. If caught in its early stages, male pattern baldness can be reversed and hair growth restored. Although the possible causes of this condition range from genetic to environmental, scientists have been able to determine that androgen hormones, which are typically associated with hair growth, may play an important role.

Since some hair follicles are genetically resistant to balding, they may be used in hair transplantation. While this procedure is very effective in restoring hair growth to some parts of the scalp, patches of hair may appear several years after the surgery, as more baldness occurs in other areas.
