The People's Republic of Bangladesh is a South Asian country that is bordered by India, Burma and the Bay of Bengal. Its most populous city and capital is Dhaka, which is also the country's most important political, cultural and social hub.

Bangladesh is a unitary parliamentary democracy, whose incumbent president is Zillur Rahman. Although highly praised by the United Nations for its progress in human development, Bangladesh still maintains a high poverty rate.

Although the country gained its independence from Pakistan in 1971, the ensuing years were filled with political turmoil, natural disasters and widespread poverty. After the installation of democracy in 1991 however, Bangladesh has seen a relatively calm and steady social and political progress.
