The word banker today no longer refers to just those who work in a bank. Instead, it encompasses all the people even remotely tied with banks or finance in general. Even the ones who invest money can themselves be called bankers. Contrary to popular belief, one need not actually have much knowledge about how finance works to become a banker.

For example, take the case of Mohammad Yunus and Gramen Bank...

Yunus got a check for ten million kronor (which is roughly around 1.5 million dollars), along with the Nobel Prize for his endeavors in banking. He took micro-finance to the next frontier by allowing petty farmers to take credit loans or debt from his bank. However, he had no intentions of an institutionalized bank when he dreamed of the concept Gramen Bank employs today.

It all started out when poor farmers in Bangladesh came to ask him for money. As he started dolling cash out (and receiving it back too), he devised a simple yet effective method of turning this into a nationwide phenomenon.

Pretty soon most of the finance news channels all over the world started to follow Gramen Bank and its initiatives to educate the world more on microfinance. In the opinion of the Noble committee, if more banks such as Gramen opened up all over the world poverty could be effectively tackled and reduced over time.
