banking
With banks failing left and right during this economic downturn, and credit unions and other financial institutions quickly eating away at their profits, it's easy to see how banks have become "Persona Non-Grata." Not only are banks failing (and getting bailed out by our tax dollars!), but they are beginning to get heavily regulated now because they have been allowed to run amok for so long.
Regardless, banks still perform some very important roles for the economy and they will always play a role in our economy for as long as there are markets to service. First of all, banks act as payment agents by conducting checking accounts for customers, paying checks drawn by customers, and collecting checks deposited to customers' current accounts. Furthermore, banks also enable customer payments via other payment methods such as telegraphic transfers, wiring, and ATMs. Finally, banks provide almost all payment services and a bank account is considered indispensable by most businesses, individuals, and governments.
