Barnes and Noble — or, as it was referred to once by a tipsy customer when I was working at a competing bookstore, Bartles and Jaymes — is the largest book store chain in the United States, with over 700 large, upscale retail stores. This same inebriated fellow, however, would need to sober up and get the wine cooler off his mind if he was really serious about his book search. Then again, he could usually grab some Starbucks Coffee at a B&N café before delving into their miles of aisles of books, periodicals, music, DVDs, graphic novels, gifts, and games.

A major element of Barnes and Nobles’ Mission Statement contends that "Above all, we expect to be a credit to the communities we serve, a valuable resource to our customers, and a place where our dedicated booksellers can grow and prosper." In this respect, B&N’s community services includes book fairs, author appearances, children’s story times, and promotion of literacy and the arts. In addition, customers also benefit from discounted bestsellers, a membership program that offers additional savings, and a website with mail-order convenience.
