The Invisibles that Made the Beijing Games - Dark Side of the Olympics

I mentioned earlier that the computer-generated 55-second video footage of giant fireworks on film at the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics was pure simulacrum–with no relation to ‘reality.’ It turns out that there was more “staging” than meets the eye at the 2008 Beijing games.

Beijing Olympics - Is anyone else tired of Michael Phelps?

Too much of a good thing syndrome? Congratulations to him though, for becoming the “greatest Olympian ever.” However, I would like it if that label was used to describe winners of the decathlon event, all-round athletes, rather than someone participating in aquatic events differentiated by strokes and lengths.

    Exterminieren!

"This is my ultimate victory: the destruction of reality itself!" Crikey. Now, I could at this point ruin what's left of your weekend with several thousand words about Baudrillard and the deceptive reality of the simulacrum, spiced up with half a dozen Nietzsche-fuelled footnotes.

Combined with semiotic signification, the images of contemporary mass media, in the form of advertising, cinema, television and print media form a nexus of meaning with the viewer at the centre. As suggested by Stuart and Elizabeth Ewen in Channels of Desire: Mass Images and the Shaping of American

    ANOTHER REALITY

    http://speedygonzalezesdeladea.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 06/ another-reality.html

The terroristic hypperrealism of our world, a world where a 'real' event occurs in a vacuum, stripped of its context and visible only from afar, televisually. Here we have a sort of surgically accurate prefigurement of the events of our future: events so minimal that they might well not need take place at all — along with their maximal enlargement on screens.
