Last week I reported that an 8-year old boy from Florida had been attacked by a black bear in the Smoky Mountain National Forest. His father had to fight the bear off, both suffering from cuts and bruises but fortunately no serious physical injuries occurred.

© By Othmar VohringerThe news headline this morning read “Bear attacks B.C. women in her yard”. That did not happen out in the rural countryside. The 35-year-old woman was attacked while berry picking in her garden near the city center. She is now recovering in hospital from serve injuries.

Here we go once again. An 8-year old boy was playing by the stream in Great Smoky Mountain National Park when he was attacked by a young black bear. His father chased the bear away but not after both sustained non life-threatening injuries. And in response, as is typical, park officials said, “an attack like this is very uncommon”.

A black bear a woman who was gardening in Conquitlam, BC  yesterday. Various reports indicate the bear attacked without provocation and the woman escaped to call 911 with non-life threatening injuries. She is recovering with several bites to her body.

A bear mauled a woman who was walking her dogs Tuesday in rural Kern County before she escaped and drove herself to a nearby fire station, said authorities. They were still searching for the animal on Wednesday. The woman suffered severe lacerations to her face and head and was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, said county fire spokesman Sean Collins.

They are more frequent than most people realize.
